Velenšek entered the bronze medal berth after going down to the American Kyla Harrison, who went on to defend her Olympic title from London with a win over Audrey Tcheumeo of France.

This is the career highlight for the 25-year-old Slovenian, whose previous best was second place at the World Championships in 2015.

Velenšek's medal wraps up Slovenia's judo performances in Rio, so far the most successful sport for the country after Tina Trstenjak won gold in the -63kg category.

The third medal in Rio was secured by kayaker Peter Kauzer, who won silver in the men's K-1 slalom.
