Just like the year before the University of Maribor was listed in the 501-600 category, while the University of Ljubljana made the 601-800 ranking.

More than 1,300 universities have been assessed in the survey and the top 980 list was released by the London-based Times Higher Education magazine earlier this week.

The tables rank universities based on five key criteria; teaching, research, citations, income from cooperation with industry and international outlook.

Maribor outdid Ljubljana mainly in terms of citations, as well as by industry income, while Ljubljana scored better in teaching and research.

"The results of the Times rankings confirm the University of Maribor is a quality institution," Chancellor Igor Tičar was cited as saying in a press release from the university.

"We are becoming a central research institution which is linking with industry and in cooperation with our partners we are creating a hub of sustainable development of the broader region."

The times list is topped by Oxford University, followed by the California Institute of Technology, and Stanford University.
