Hiking, St. Martin's wine routes dominate weekend itinerary
Ljubljana, 9 November - With the competitive running season past its peak, hiking is taking over as the main recreational activity in Slovenia. Plenty of hikes are scheduled for the weekend, including some that involve wine tasting.
The biggest hiking event will be the 30th Litija-Čatež hike on Saturday, which traces the literary journey taken by author Fran Levstik in the mid-19th century.
Hikers start in Litija between 6 and 9 AM. On route to Čatež, over a dozen homesteads serve fresh food and drinks. More information is available at http://levstik.si/?page_id=4.
There will be plenty of refreshments at hikes around the country marking St. Martin's Day, the day when according to tradition must turns into wine.
Some of the biggest hikes taking in wine routes will be held in Sevnica (http://td-trzisce.si), Celje (www.pdgrmada.org), Ormož (www.pdrustvo-mmormoz.si), Šentjernej (www.dv-sentjernej.si), and Puconci (www.puconci.si), but there are dozens more available across Slovenian wine country.
Those seeking a bigger challenge can go to Italy, just across the Slovenian border, for a run up 511 stairs with a total elevation of 138 metres (www.krasnadlani.si).
