Slovenia third in Europe in recycling
Luxembourg, 31 January - Slovenia recycled 54.1% of its waste in 2015, which is the third best result in Europe, fresh Eurostat data show. Only Austria and Germany had higher shares of recycled waste, 56% and 66.1%, respectively.
According to the web portal Resource, Slovenia has been focussing on reducing the amount of waste it generates in recent years.
After the share of its recycled waste reached 22% in 2010, it almost doubled to 42% two years later.
In 2014, the amount of recycling dropped by six percentage points only to increase again in 2015.
The EU's goal is to have member states recycle more than half of their waste by 2020. So far only six countries have succeeded at this.
Germany has been leading the way since 2005, when the share of its recycled waste exceeded 60%. In 2015, it surpassed the previous year's result by 0.5 percentage points.
