Young Slovenian photographer wins National Geographic prize
Ljubljana, 1 February - A 13-year-old from Ljubljana has won the Amazing Animals category of the National Geographic International Photography Contest for Kids, selected from more than 46,000 submissions around the world.

The winning photograph, which earned 13-year-old Maj Kastelic first prize in the Amazing Animals category of the National Geographic International Photography Contest for Kids.

Maj Kastelic impressed the judging panel with his picture entitled Tik pred zdajci (High Noon), in which he caught a face-off between a lizard and a bug.
The photo earned Maj first place in the Amazing Animals category, which includes photos of pets, zoo animals or wild animals, said publishing house Rokus Klett.
Open to children aged 6 to 14, the worldwide competition was conducted in partnership with the US edition of National Geographic Kids magazine and nine other local-language editions, which are based in Bulgaria, China, Egypt, Germany, India, Indonesia, Netherlands, Slovenia, the UK, and the US.
Each country held a national contest and, in the final round, sent one photo from each of the four categories to the National Geographic headquarters for judging. The categories were Amazing Animals, Dare to Explore, Weird but True and Wild Vacation.
The Slovenian part of the competition was organised for the 12th year by the Slovenian National Geographic Junior magazine, a licensed edition of the National Geographic Kids magazine from the US.
