The Vipava Valley Ultra-Trail on Saturday will feature the most enduring runners as its routes explores the picturesque valley in western Slovenia.

Runners can choose between 100-, 50- and 25-kilometre routes that will take them through dark woods, past small villages and across fertile wine-growing hills.

All three routes are "offering unforgettable challenge and experience: breathtaking views, spring scents and flavours, and hospitable locals," according to the organisers.

The 17th Hike on Wine-Growing Hills will meanwhile take place on Resistance Day on Thursday and is around 6 kilometres long.

The traditional hike on the wine-growing hills of eastern Slovenia starts in Dolenji Boštanj on the Sava River.

Other recreational events of note include the 25th Roman's Hike, which will take you across the hills surrounding Stična in central Slovenia.

The traditional hike taking place on Labour Day was initiated by Roman Tratar, who led a group of hikers in 1993 to a circular route with the start and finish in Stična.

The original route was almost 30 kilometres long and was too difficult, so it was later shortened to 22 kilometres.
