Mass recreational events scheduled for the weekend

Ljubljana, 3 May - Ljubljana will host two massively popular events for recreational athletes this weekend, just in time for runners and hikers to start the season in earnest.

One of the biggest events in the country is scheduled from 4 to 6 May as tens of thousands of runners and hikers make their way on the path around Ljubljana that traces barbed wire which had enclosed the city during the Second World War.

The event peaks on Saturday, when trios do the 12.5- and 29-kilometre running events and everyone else makes a casual stroll on sections of the path or, more rarely, all 35 kilometres of it.

On Sunday the annual Wings for Life charity run is scheduled, starting in Congress Square in the centre of the city and taking the runners towards Gorenjsko.

The way the event works is that runners start and after half an hour a catcher car starts trailing them cruising at a constant speed. The last runner to be caught by the vehicle is the winner.

The proceeds will be donated for spinal cord research.
