Katanec retiring as Slovenia head coach
London, 6 October - After Slovenia lost 0:1 to England in Thursday's World Cup qualifier in London, Srečko Katanec announced his resignation as the national team's head coach.
"The match on Sunday will be my last," the 54-year-old told the reporters after last night's defeat at Wembley Stadium, referring to the fixture with Scotland, Slovenia's last qualifier for the 2018 World Cup.
In this way Katanec indicated that he did not believe Slovenia had any chance of making it to the World Cup any more; a play-off would be theoretically possible only if Slovenia defeated Scotland and if Slovakia suffered a defeat at home at the hands of Malta, who have only scored a point in nine matches.
Katanec has been the national team's head coach since December 2012. He earlier coached Slovenia successfully between 1998 and 2002, taking the team to the 2000 Euro and the 2002 World Cup.
Sunday's match against Scotland will be his 89th in the role.
