All about chestnuts this weekend
Ljubljana, 11 October - It will be all about chestnuts for sports enthusiasts this weekend as various mountaineering and cycling clubs welcome autumn with picnics and races.
All around the country, from the south-western Karst region to Prekmurje in the north-east, various clubs will organise picnics dedicated to chestnuts as the nut season begins.
In Hrpelje (SW), cyclists will join a 40-kilometre tour along the Brkini hills, while runners will be invited to join either a 5-km or 10-km race, and hikers will go on a tour along the paths surrounding the village of Rodik. More information is available at: http://rodik.si/.
Similar events will be organised on Mt Kal in central Slovenia (www.pdhrastnik.si) and in the village of Rogašovci in the north-east (www.td-rogasovci.si).
Other than that, runners will also embark on the only race through the Karst underground in Slovenia, the X-tek Dimnice.
Aimed at protecting the iconic underground, the race is held in the Dimnice (Smokehouse) cave, where according to legend, the devil is curing meat so smoke is rising from the cave in the winter. More information is available at www.ljudstvotekacev.si.
