Busy night for midwives
Ljubljana, 1 January - Midwives across the country had a busy New Year's Eve, in particular at the Ljubljana and Trbovlje maternity hospitals, where the first newborns of the year were delivered just a minute after midnight. The honour of being the first newborns of the year went to baby boys.
Within hours after fireworks went off, newborns were also delivered in Brežice, Postojna and Celje. By late morning seven babies were delivered in Ljubljana alone.
On a typical New Year's Day around 50-60 babies are born in Slovenia, with the Ljubljana maternity hospital by far the busiest maternity ward in the country.
In Ljubljana 5,928 babies were delivered in 2017, including 173 pairs of twins and even one set of triplets.
