Šenk's composition will be played at the Royal Albert Hall in London on 3 September, making her the first Slovenian composer to appear at BBC Proms, her spokesperson Alen Salihović told the STA on Monday.

"I've been writing the piece for several months and should complete it in a few weeks' time, then I'll go to Berlin for the first rehearsal," Šenk, 36, said in a written statement.

She explained that she had found inspiration for the music in glass as a material to point to the expression "breaking the glass ceiling".

In this way, Šenk would like to point to prejudice and stereotypes about women, making it harder for them to get a better job.

She entitled the composition Baca, a bead in Latin, linking it to the making of glass beads as one of the oldest crafts in the world.

"In this way I've linked art with the real situation in society, which I am faced with too."

The initiative to invite Šenk to BBC Proms had come from the Berliner Philharmoniker, which wanted to work with her again after the orchestra played her In the Absence at the Salzburg Festival in 2013.

Šenk graduated from the Ljubljana Academy of Music in 2004 and completed her post-graduate studies at the Carl Maria von Weber College of Music in Dresden in 2006.

Her music has been performed at a number of festivals and with many orchestras and ensembles around the world, most often in Europe.

In 2017, she received the Prešeren Fund Prize for outstanding achievement from the previous two years, a major recognition for an artist in Slovenia.

In 2004, while still studying, she won first prize at the Young Euro Classic Festival in Berlin for her Violin Concerto No. 1.

The concerto will be played by the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra in Ljubljana in May.

Over the past few years she has worked with France's Ensemble Intercontemporain from Paris.

She has been invited to be the artistic director of the 20th Slowind festival of contemporary music, which will be held in Ljubljana in November.

The annual BBC Proms takes place at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Its mission is to take the best of classical music to as broad an audience as possible.

This year, it will be held between July and September, featuring concerts, workshops, talks and other events.
