Smart waste project wins business practice competition

Ljubljana, 16 May - A smart waste management project launched by Agitavit Solutions and the waste utility Komunala Brežice has been declared the winner of an AmCham competition for best business practices.

The joint venture won in the category innovation, one of the segments of the Best of the Best, an AmCham competition aimed at introducing new knowledge, approaches, products, processes and business models in Slovenia.

The winning project revolves around the digitalisation of waste management with the help of smart sensors that monitor how full an individual rubbish bin is, to optimise waste removal times.

According to Žiga Mravlje, the head of the Internet of Things division at Agitavit Solutions, the waste utility is looking at a 50% reduction in the number of times it has to remove waste, resulting in significant cost savings.

Two other projects were shortlisted, BTC Living Lab - City as a Lab, a laboratory for innovations in the BTC shopping district, and Bajda - Ultra Vergin, a special olive oil produced by pressing olives with ultrasound.

The competition is conducted across three segments - motivation, innovation and connection - and the absolute winner will be declared in autumn.
