Maja Pak, the head of the Slovenian Tourism Board (STO), believes that the Slovenian publication of the acclaimed global culinary guide will strengthen the position of Slovenia as a culinary destination for high-end guests.

"The STO is honoured that Michelin has recognised Slovenia as a top destination of extraordinary natural heritage, strong sustainable commitment, high-quality ingredients and truly talented chefs," said Pak at today's press conference.

According to Michelin sales and marketing director Romain Perrier, the guide's food critics have been assessing restaurants in Slovenia for the past year.

Slovenia's culinary potential has increased considerably, said Perrier, adding that the Michelin Red Guide not only boosts tourism but also strengthens the development of culinary scenes as well as has a positive impact on the economy, creating new jobs.

Pak believes that this step is a great opportunity for developing value-added products as well, one of the main challenges of Slovenian tourism.

"Michelin addresses the most affluent culinary tourists who are willing to foot the bill for top culinary experiences, drive that extra mile and stay longer at the destination to get them. That is the exact type of tourists we'd like to attract to Slovenia," said Pak.

The tourist board will invest EUR 425,000 per year in the next two years into promotion and development activities in cooperation with Michelin.

A year ago, another renowned culinary guide Gault & Millau entered the Slovenian culinary scene, naming Hiša Franko, led by star chef Ana Roš, and Pri Lojzetu, helmed by another acclaimed chef Tomaž Kavčič, as the highest-ranking restaurants. Meanwhile, Igor Jagodic from the Strelec restaurant was awarded Chef of the Year 2019.
