Civil Protection boss declared Val 202's person of the year
Ljubljana, 23 December - National public radio station Val 202 declared Srečko Šestan, the commander of Civil Protection, its person of the year on Wednesday. He was picked by the finalists selected by Val 202 listeners.
Šestan, who daily coordinates the work of more then 1,000 members of Civil Protection who are helping to fight the epidemic, and was the person of the month in June, thanked the listeners who voted for him. "By voting for me, they have voted for all those who are working and helping in this crazy situation," he said.
Public broadcaster RTV Slovenija said in explaining the decision that Šestan and his team took over when it was the hardest. His job is very demanding and entails a lot of responsibility and pressure.
The 65-year-old Šestan lives near the town of Ilirska Bistrica, south-west. He is a carpentry engineer and has been working for Civil Protection since 1996.
The other candidates for the person of the year were doctor Nevenka Mlinar, mountain rescuer Anton Sazonov - Tonač, the head of the consular sector at the Foreign Ministry Andrej Šter, former employee of the Commodity Reserves Agency and whistleblower Ivan Gale, and nurse and trade unionist Polona Tanšek Aškerc.
The list also included former head of the Mountain Rescue Service Tolmin Žarko Trušnovec, cycling star Primož Roglič, basketball star Goran Dragić, the head of the Biotechnical Education Centre Ljubljana Jasna Kržin Stepišnik, and journalist and author Boštjan Videmšek.
