Pogačar, who last September became the youngest Tour de France winner in its history, was in a way rewarded with a new five-year contract for getting the Emirati squad the win on their home turf.

UAE Team Emirates president Matar Al Yabhouni said on the occasion that "Tadej is our present and our future. He is a rider who was able to win the Tour de France despite his young age and still managed to handle the pressure of such a great success."

He added that the Slovenian had shown great poise and determination to win the UAE Tour and that he was sure that we would continue to achieve important successes together going forward.

Pogačar, too, is excited about the years ahead: "I feel at home in this team: there is a special atmosphere between the management, riders and staff and it's a good environment to be in. The team shows a lot of trust and confidence in me."

By winning the UAE Tour, he became the second Slovenian with the accolade, after his older compatriot Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma) won the premiere race around the United Arab Emirates two years ago.
