Divers retrieve a tonne of waste from Ljubljanica river

Ljubljana, 29 March - While thousands of volunteers gathered across Slovenia on Saturday to rid their towns and villages of any litter lying around in the natural environment, a group of divers did the same in the Ljubljanica river in Ljubljana. They hauled up about a tonne of garbage that landed in the river in the past year.

The waste retrieved from Ljubljana included road signs, waste baskets, bikes and even a bag of car licence plates, said a press release from retailer Spar, a sponsor of the campaign.

Ljubljanica is cleaned every year around the World Water Day observed on 22 March.

Organised by the city of Ljubljana and Vivera diving club, the clean-up effort included several diving clubs and a number of volunteers, among them firefighters, rescue teams and anglers.
