Diaspora minister visits Slovenians in Indiana

Indianapolis, 24 September - Minister for Slovenians Abroad Helena Jaklitsch visited the Slovenian community in Indianapolis in the US on Thursday to talk about strengthening cooperation, especially in education, culture and genealogy.

The minister visited the Slovenian National Home in Indianapolis, the only Slovenian club in the US state of Indiana, the Office for Slovenians Abroad said on Friday.

She met members of several Slovenian organisations, and representatives of the twin cities Indianapolis and Slovenia's Piran, which this year mark 20 years of their twinhood.

Emigration from Slovenia to Indiana and the Indianapolis area was most intense between 1890 and 1920.

There are now at least some 2,000 people of Slovenian descent living there, while 350-400 are active members of the Slovenian club.

Minister Jaklitsch started a ten-day trip to the US to visit the Slovenian community on 16 September, including to mark the 30th anniversary of Slovenia's independence.
