"More than 172,000 flats unoccupied": Three years ago, the Statistics Office found more than 172,000 flats were no-one's place of residence during the census. The current tax policy does not stimulate the sale of empty flats. (front page, page 8)

"Votes of Greens and FDP decisive": Encouraged with the victory, albeit tight, the German Social Democrats (SPD) firmly believe that the new coalition with the Greens and the liberal FDP should be headed by their chancellor Olaf Scholz. (front page, pages 5, 7)

La Palma volcano eruption
"Volcano takes a two-hour break": The Cumbre Vieja volcano on the Spanish La Palma island stopped spewing lava yesterday morning but roared again two hours later to let out a column of black smoke. (front page)

Delayed school start
