Giro d'Italia to visit Slovenia again in 2022
Ljubljana, 30 September - Following last year's high-profile organisation of stage 15 of the road cycling race Giro d'Italia in Slovenia's picturesque Goriško region, the race will again make a detour through Slovenia next year. This time one of its stages will run through the Posočje region, RTV Slovenija reported.
The Giro d'Italia, one of the three iconic Grand Tour races, will visit Slovenia on 27 May 2022 when the 19th stage will take the riders across the Italian-Slovenian border to Kobarid and Livek in the Posočje region, famous for its emerald green Soča river.
The public broadcaster reported the news on its web portal after the Trieste-based newspaper Il Piccolo revealed on Saturday information about the cross-border stage that will, apart from Slovenia's Posočje, take place in Italy's Friuli Venezia Giulia.
A return of part of the Giro to Slovenia in 2021 was a long-awaited decision, received with lots of fanfare and turned into success. After 17 years, the race again visited Slovenia on 23 May in what was a warm reception with numerous fans lining the route.
This great atmosphere made waves in Italy and the cycling world, which was particularly impressed by the landscape of rolling hills in the Goriško region.
Kobarid Mayor confirmed the news about the second Giro visit to Slovenia in a row, saying: "Yes, it's true. Well, at the moment, it is the case that the Giro will pass through Kobarid. It's not 100% yet, but the [Kobarid] municipality had this agreement with the organisers from Friuli already in June."
The Giro 2022 route will be officially unveiled in November.
