The defending champion had a theoretical chance to win the title today, in addition to Jeffrey Herlings of the Netherlands, who become the overall winner, and Romain Febvre of France.

The 25-year-old Slovenian finished the two-run race in second place, ahead of Febvre, to collect a total of 688 points in the elite class of the FIM Motocross World Championship.

Herlings earned his second world champion title after 2018 by collecting 708 points, while the French finished second overall with 703 points.

Gajser was the defending champion after he won the title last year, which was his third after the wins in the 2016 and 2019 seasons.
