Merry Day of Culture brings mix of online and in-person events
Ljubljana, 3 December - This year's Merry Day of Culture, a celebration of the birth anniversary of Romantic poet France Prešeren (1800-1849), one of Slovenia's greats, will be marked in hybrid form on Friday. Cultural institutions, where admission will be free the entire day, will organise both online and in-person events.
Compared to last year when the day was marked only in the virtual world, the number of events has nearly tripled, likely due to the possibility of on-site activities, the Culture Ministry has said.
A number of theatres are again taking part in the cultural celebration.
The Ljubljana SNG Drama theatre will stage Škorpijon (Scorpion) by French playwright and novelist Véronique Olmi, and its counterpart in Slovenia's second largest city, SNG Maribor, will deliver the play Mostovi in Bogovi (Bridges and Gods) by Slovenian author Nejc Gazvoda, which was inspired by veteran writer Tone Partljič's stories.
The day will also open up opportunities for diverse museum and gallery experiences. Open days will be held, as well as free guided tours and activities for children.
Moreover, a number of exhibitions will open. Cankarjev Dom, one of Slovenia's central cultural institutions, will provide a guided tour of an exhibit dedicated to the 14th Biennial of Slovenian Illustration.
Merry Day of Culture has been celebrated since 2000 when 200 years had passed since Prešeren's birth.
