Taxes
"Government would take less from the poor and the young": The Finance Ministry has sent for public consultation changes to tax legislation that include tweaks to the income tax act favourable for low-income people. The changes are planned to enter into force at the beginning of 2023. (front page, 2)

Air quality
"We are breathing better air": Pollution with sulphur dioxide (SO2) in Ljubljana has dropped significantly since 2000 due to a switch in energy source and expansion of district heating. Now, other pollutants are at the forefront - particulates, ozone and nitrogen oxides. (front page, 10)

War in Ukraine
"Ukrainian cereal is ripe for voyage": The first shipment of cereal from Ukraine and headed for Tripoli has left the port of Odessa after several months of blockade. "This is a day of relief for the whole world," said Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba. (front page, 5)

"Boštjančič overrides Janša's tax reform": The new government has assessed that the tax reform of the previous cabinet is poorly targeted and unfair, so it has prepared changes of its own that include a freeze on the raising of the general tax allowance. (front page, 2)

Serbia-Kosovo relations
"Dispute about documents ignites new escalation": The announcement of reciprocal measures by the Kosovo government given that Serbia does not recognise documents of the state of Kosovo has caused protests by Serbs in Kosovo, who barricaded border crossings between the two countries. (front page, 6, commentary 12)

FINANCE

Taxes
"What government leaves, what it takes and what new taxes on wages will be like": Under the changes proposed by the new government, the general tax allowance in 2023 will be EUR 5,000 and will not be rising any more after that. The highest income tax rate of 50% is back, and tax on rental income will amount to 25%. (front page, 4)

Retail
"How consumer habits changed/Who will record prices for Golob": The paper finds that consumers are becoming more economical and plan their purchases better due to inflation, and there is less impulsive shopping. It also says that there are great differences in bids for the government's call for application for monitoring of prices of basic foodstuffs, with the lowest bid amounting to under EUR 18,000. (front page, 8-9)

Recovery money
"Why drawing of funds is not going as planned and how we will solve this": An application for the first instalment worth EUR 57 million was supposed to be submitted by the end of July, but it was not, because not all conditions have been met. The drawing of the next, larger instalment will be an even greater challenge. (front page, 2-3)

"Sport lovers deprived": The battle of media empires, i.e. providers over the rights to broadcast basketball and volleyball games and the government(s) inactivity and procrastination in this department have left TV viewers deprived of games played by the Slovenian national teams. Taxes
"They would like to override Janša's reform": Finance Minister Klemen Boštjančič has proposed changes to the tax reform of the previous, Janez Janša government. A raise in the general tax allowance is planned already for next year due to the growing costs of living. (front page, 3)

Online fraud
"He fell for advertisement on quick earnings": The Maribor criminal police are dealing with a case of online fraud in which a man transferred EUR 60,000 to a fraudster believing that he was investing in cryptocurrencies. (front page, 13)

Fire in Kras
"How to repair the damage done": While firefighters are watching over the site in the aftermath of the largest fire in Slovenia's history, experts are already drafting plans to repair the damage done to the forest, fields, vineyards, olive groves and tourist infrastructure. (front page, 5)
