Milk at centre of this year's traditional Slovenian breakfast
Ljubljana, 18 November - Children at Slovenian kindergartens and schools will be served traditional Slovenian breakfast on Friday, with the star of the meal this year being milk and diary products. Under the motto Breakfast with Milk - a Great Day, children will enjoy locally produced milk, honey, butter, bread and apples, and other local fruits.
The project was launched in 2011 by the Slovenian Beekeepers' Association and has since expanded to include 14 governmental and non-governmental organisations. "The project is excellent for raising awareness of the importance of locally-produced food," the head of the Alliance of Countryside Youth, Janez Rakovec, said at a press conference presenting the project earlier this week.
"Slovenian food is healthy and of s high quality, especially if it is locally produced," said Agriculture Minister Irena Šinko, adding that by buying locally "we support our farmers, but we must also thank our food-processing industry that processes these products".
The traditional Slovenian breakfast will be served today to 86,000 kindergarten children and 200,000 primary school students and children with special needs at social institutions.
According to Irena Simčič from the Education Institute, the project helps children learn about the importance of locally produced food, farming, eating breakfast, and a healthy diet.
Since the start of the project, more than 2.5 million servings of traditional Slovenian breakfasts have been prepared.
At present more than 730,000 meals are prepared at educational institutions every day and at least 20% of the food must come have a national certificate of quality. By 2023, 12% of the food will have to be organic, she said.
