Summer festival season gets under way in Ljubljana
Ljubljana, 7 June - The Big Band Orchestra of the Slovenian Armed Forces will open the 15th iteration of the June in Ljubljana festival, a series of more than 40 free outdoor concerts and performances, on Wednesday.
The opening concert will be held in Congress Square, the main venue of the festival. The orchestra will perform remakes of evergreen soul tunes under the baton of conductor Igor Strnad with guest singers Neisha and Jana Šušteršič, according to the Ljubljana municipality, the main organizer of the event.
The festival will feature dance, music and theatre events. Ballet enthusiasts will enjoy Radio And Juliet by choreographer Edward Clug, who put a alternative rock spin on the classic love story.
The Maribor Opera will give a concert on 15 June, which will also open the 35th Imago Sloveniae international festival. Two days later, the venue will be rainbow-coloured for the annual Pride Parade.
There will be music with the Rock Mulčki band, as well as a balfolk dance performance by the Godalkanje Fiddle Gang. The programme also includes the 10th iteration of the Špil Liga high school band league finals.
In the afternoons, visitors will have a chance to grab a book or two to read in the nearby park as part of the open-air Library Under the Treetops organized annually by the the Divja Misel Institute.
There will also be a varied programme for kids in the mornings with theatre shows by the Fru Fru Theatre, the Šentjakob Theatre, KUD Center, the Slovenian Chamber Music Theatre and the Mini Theatre. Children will also be able to partake in a circus day and an arts walk dedicated to the history of music artists.
To conclude the festival, Ljubljana will traditionally join 700 other countries around the world to celebrate Music Day (Fête de la Musique) on 21 June, the day of the summer solstice.
