Bilingual Slovenian-Hungarian school in Lendava gets extension
Lendava, 9 June - A new extension of the bilingual primary school I Lendava was inaugurated on Friday, providing a much-needed 800 square meters of additional space. The event in the eastern-most Slovenian town, located right on the Hungarian border, was also attended by Education Minister Darjo Felda.
The EUR 1.2 million extension, mostly financed from the state budget, will be operational starting from 1 September. It provides additional space for both teachers and students, including two lecture halls accommodating 80 and 40 people, four classrooms, four offices, a social area for teachers with a tea kitchen, a reading room, and restrooms.
"At the ministry, we are constantly striving for the high-quality development of bilingual education and improving the learning and working conditions. The new extension serves as proof of our success," Minister Felda told the inaugural ceremony.
Lendava Mayor Janez Magyar moreover noted that the need for expanding the educational facilities is an indicator of the vitality within the municipality.
Lendava is one five municipalities in Slovenia that are home to the Hungarian minority. According to data by the National Electoral Commission, there were 5,962 Hungarian minority members with voting right in Slovenia in 2018.
