Medlog and Špica are flooded, as is the city park and Polule, a suburban borough in the south, the Celje municipality said.

Some 4,000 residents, a tenth of the city's population, have been evacuated.

The evacuees have been put up in the Zlatogor sports hall, a youth centre, and a lodge in nearby Štore.

Electricity and gas have been turned off in the flooded boroughs. Residents have been advised to keep away from the river.
