Celje out of the worst, people start returning home

Celje, 5 August - The eastern city of Celje was at risk of major flooding on Friday but although the Savinja River was heavily swollen and several boroughs were evacuated, the damage appears not to be as extensive as feared.

The level of the Savinja has dropped by two metres from its Friday peak and people who were evacuated - about 4,000 were ordered to evacuate - can now start returning home, the city administration said on Saturday.

Civil protection teams and workers of the local water and roads utility are currently on the ground inspecting the damage, including several bridges that were at high risk.

The bridge towards Laško, one of the city's most important road connections, will reopen shortly, the city said. Residents are advised to boil tap water.

Yesterday the Savinja flooded the boroughs Medlog, Špica and Polule, as well as the city park.
