"Now I know and believe that this is the worst disaster in independent Slovenia," she said after visiting Nazarje, Mozirje, Rečica ob Savinji and Braslovče.

Pirc Musar described the situation on the ground as horrifying but said the relief effort had shown yet again the exceptional dedication of the army, police, firefighters, civil protection and "in particular the people, who help their fellow humans".

"Once the water is gone the real work will begin. We must not forget the country and the people who have been affected," she said, urging all those who can help to join the relief effort once the time comes for that.

The president spoke in front of home appliances maker BSH Hišni Aparati, one of Slovenia's biggest exporters, whose main production facility has been completely flooded. "We may not forget about business, about schools and social institutions," she said.
