Dnevnik says Golob should refrain from populism
Ljubljana, 10 August - The newspaper Dnevnik cautions Prime Minister Robert Golob regarding his announcements about quick flood repairs, noting that his is statements make those who have lost everything believe that the state will provide speedy support.
The prime minister must avoid populism and must start communicating uncomfortable news and ask for patience. The repair will take a long time, it will cost a lot of money and it will be difficult.
Golob should internalise the warnings by climatologist Lučka Kajfež Bogataj, who has advised rethinking infrastructure and siting solutions in the post-flood rebuild.
So far, Slovenia has shown no political will as regards climate change, despite clear warnings from scientists and the EU. What is more, the country does not even have an institution dedicated to climate change issues, nor experts required to staff it.
"Now, Mother Nature carried out a convincing stress test that proved the necessity of immediate action. And there is no guarantee that the stress test will not be repeated soon," the paper says under the headline Quicksand.
