Delo says flood reconstruction will become political tool

Ljubljana, 18 August - Delo says in its front-page commentary on Friday that sooner or later floods will become a point of criticism of the government. Currently, the opposition is holding back, but once elections start approaching the situation will change, the newspaper says under the headline Flood Reconstruction as Political Tool.

New Slovenia (NSi), the smaller of the two opposition parties, has vowed to be constructive, while Janez Janša, the head of the Democrats (SDS), is also lenient towards the government.

"The SDS's trademark 'opposition destructiveness' would be perceived as hampering the government at the expense of the victims at this moment."

The reconstruction will take a long time and there will be enough time to level criticism against the government, especially given the fact that flood victims have good reason for disgruntlement.

It would be naive to expect that reconstruction would not be used as a political tool once elections start approaching.

The paper notes that not the reforms announced by the prime minister, but the actual reconstruction will determine the government's success, and affect the next election.

Good communication of those in charge will be key. Hasty promises can return and hit you on the head like a boomerang. "The public will only see the results. Adrenaline, emotions and solidarity will not last forever."
