Two weeks after floods Koroška still busy with urgent works
Slovenj Gradec/Ravne na Koroškem/Dravograd, 18 August - Two weeks since devastating floods, emergency works are still not over in certain municipalities in the northern Koroška region, mainly because of landslides. In two municipalities alone, more than 400 landslides were recorded, and damage assessments are ongoing.
In the municipality of Slovenj Gradec some 170 landslides have been triggered after the floods. In the Ozare area, the biggest and most problematic landslide is threatening a number of homes.
In the first days of what is considered Slovenia's biggest natural disaster to date, 70 residents were evacuated in the area. Since then, an additional 14 have been moved to safety due to landslide risk, and 19 will have to leave their homes in the event of rain, the municipality said on Friday.
In the municipality of Dravograd, some 240 landslides have been reported, and 35 people are not able to return to their homes due to landslide hazard.
Emergency works continue in the Ravne na Koroškem area as well, with river streams being cleaned-up to prevent any further damage come rain.
Volunteers are still needed to clean buildings, but to a lesser extent, said Mayor Tomaž Rožen. What remains a problem is damaged roads and water supply issues.
Some 60 landslides have been recorded there and three families remain away from their homes at the municipality's request, while a few others have temporarily moved out on their own.
Certain other municipalities have also urged volunteers to continue helping with the clean-up effort.
