Fierce storms again trigger floods on the coast

Portorož/Piran, 30 August - Severe storms that hit parts of the Slovenian coast on Wednesday afternoon flooded certain roads and underpasses in the area, including in the towns of Piran and Portorož. Many buildings have been flooded, and a landslide closed a section of the Izola-Sečovlje road.

A kindergarten in the town of Lucija is among the flooded buildings, N1 portal reported.

Due to a landslide, the Izola-Sečovlje main road is closed between Valeta and Lucija, and there is only one-way traffic in Strunjan and Lucija, the traffic information centre said.

Firefighters are busy dealing with the consequences of what meteorologist Blaž Šter said was a small but intense cyclone that developed over the warm sea of the northern Adriatic.

"Heavy rains and strong winds. At Portorož Airport 66 mm of rain fell in two hours," he posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The latest flooding comes after all four coastal municipalities and other areas in the west or south-west of the country were battered by heavy rains, windstorms or hailstorms on Monday after being mainly spared in massive floods in early August.
