Slovenians in Croatia cancel annual gathering to donate money for flood relief

Zagreb, 5 September - The Union of Slovenian Associations in Croatia has called off its annual gathering that was supposed to be held this Saturday to donate the money that would be spent on the event to help those hit by the disastrous floods in Slovenia.

The all-Slovenian gathering that is attended by several hundred Slovenians every year was supposed to be held on 9 September in Golubinjak Park near Delnice.

But instead the funds the organisation received from Slovenia to host the gathering will be donated to help in flood relief. The initiative for the move came from the Slovenian Home in Zagreb.

The union will donate between EUR 10,000 and 12,000 for flood relief efforts, its president Barbara Riman told the STA. They will urge their members who were planning to attend the gathering to also donate the EUR 10 they would otherwise spend on the participation fee.

"We are aware that ten euros is not a lot, since the flood damage is enormous but we are trying to help the best we can," Riman said, adding that they would be collecting contributions until mid-October.
