Standard of living
"Housing costs drive social hardship": The standard of living depends much on whether you own your home or have a rent or mortgage to pay, but this does not count in eligibility for social benefits or subsidies in what is just one indicator of the lack of coordination between tax, social and housing policies. (front page, page 3)

Post-flood reconstruction
"When decision comes they must leave their homes": After waiting for months, people living in flood-risk areas along the Savinja and Paka rivers were told officially yesterday that they will no longer be able to live there. In a meeting with the head of the government post-flood reconstruction service Boštjan Šefic and experts they also learned that they will have to move out as soon as they are issued a decision to do so. (front page, page 4)

Israel-Hamas war
"Ground combat escalating": More than 9,000 people have been killed in the Israeli attacks in Gaza but it appears the worst is yet to come as the Israeli forces are trying to enter Gaza City. (front page, page 5)

Seasonal vaccination uptake
"Infections spreading, few get a jab": There has been an uptick in respiratory infections in recent weeks while community health centres report little interest in free vaccinations against the flu and Covid-19. (front page, 2)

Post-flood reconstruction
"Letuška Gmajna and Roje people will have to move": Representatives of the government post-flood reconstruction service and the water council presented several options to the people of Letuška Gmajna and Roje, who will have to move from the areas devastated in the August floods. If all runs according to plans, they could be moved to a safe location in good two years. (front page, page 3)

Krvavec ski resort
"New six-seater chair lift to run to Zvoh this year": The construction of a new six-seater chairlift to replace the old two-seater up Mount Zvoh at the Krvavec ski resort is slated for completion by 5 November. (front page, page 8)

"Ad saturation": While cities worldwide are trying to minimise advertising in public spaces, the Maribor municipality is dedicating more space and more solid foundations to such ads. (front page, page 13)

Illegal migration
"Cracking down on illegal migration": The interior ministers of Slovenia, Italy and Croatia called for enhancing cooperation to better control the borders on the Western Balkan migration route, agreeing in principle to boost joint border patrols. (front page, page 3)

Pensions
"Pensions to be higher": Labour Minister Luka Mesec has announced a 8.2% adjustment of pensions in January but talks with the Finance Ministry on the percentage of the rise are still ongoing. (front page, page 2)

Post-flood reconstruction
"Two-year wait for relocation?": The people of the flood-prone Letuška Gmajna will be able to move to an alternative location in Rakovlje if they wish so, but in the meantime they will have to live elsewhere for at least a year, they learned at a meeting with experts yesterday. (front page, page 3)
