Ljubljana, 8 January - Below is a review of the headlines in Slovenian dailies for Monday, 8 January:


Doctors' strike
"Strike despite last year's pay increase": In the first eight months of last year doctors' and dentists' pay went up, so many wonder why they will go on strike tomorrow. Demanding the government fulfil its commitments, they will handle only emergency cases. (front page, 3)

War in Gaza
"Three months of fighting and suffering": Three months into the war in Gaza, the number of Palestinian casualties totals more than 22,800 and thousands are missing. Gaza is on the verge of famine, and diseases are running rampant. (front page, 5)

"Slovak heroine wins Golden Fox": Slovak skier Petra Vlhova won the Golden Fox competition after finishing fourth in Saturday's giant slalom and claiming first place in Sunday's slalom race in Kranjska Gora. The organisers did great considering poor weather conditions, and the turnout was at around 6,500 visitors. (front page, 9)


"Head teachers getting more and more desperate": Schools have to deal with severe shortages of maths and physics teachers despite head teachers pleading with the authorities for help. (front page, 2-3)

"Slovakia's skier the heroine of an exhausted 60th Fox": The recap of the Golden Fox, the longest-running women's ski competition in Slovenia: Mikaela Shiffrin of the US disappointed, Slovakia's Petra Vlhova won, and the only Slovenian to bag World Cup points was Andreja Slokar. (front page, 12,13)


"Anniversary celebration without a Maribor mark": Maribor did not play a major role in the celebration of the 60th Golden Fox, a ski competition that used to be hosted by Slovenia's second largest city, but has moved to Kranjska Gora due to unfavourable snow conditions. (front page, 14-15)

Doctors' strike
"Govt bears responsibility for strike": Fides, the trade union of doctors and dentists, demands a separate pay system for themselves, new jobs and elimination of pay discrepancies ahead of the announced strike. (front page, 2-3)

Cave rescue
"Lengthy cave rescue": A three-member family and two guides have been stuck in a cave in southern Slovenia since Saturday due to rising water levels. Their condition is stable, and the rescue mission ongoing. (front page, 9)
