Work by photographer Kranjec exhibited at EU parliament
Brussels, 30 January - The Overlooked, a photo exhibition by Slovenian Mankica Kranjec, will open at the European Parliament in Brussels on Tuesday to highlight the often overlooked women who play vital roles in society by sharing their inspiring stories.
The exhibition features portraits of women across a wide range of professions, of different ages, as well as social and religious backgrounds, and short excerpts from interviews. The work shows how their many roles intertwine and overlap.
Nurses, delivery women, shop assistants, teachers and postwomen are not the only heroes of our time, Kranjec believes, also pointing to firefighters, cleaners, shop floor workers and many others. "These are women who make sure that the word does not grind to a halt in times of peace and prevent it from breaking down in crises."
The project hopes to encourage debate about multilayered and extraordinarily important challenges of the broader society and Kranjec's work raises issues of growing inequality, gender and otherwise.
The displayed images are lenticular prints, allowing photos to flow one into another, creating the impression of multiple layers.
Running until Friday, the exhibition came to the European Parliament on the proposal of Slovenian MEP Milan Brglez. Today's opening will be addressed by European Parliament Vice President Evelyn Regner, who is in charge of gender equality.
