The Ljubljana mascot led the parade through the old town, across some of the city's main landmarks such as the Triple Bridge and the PreŇ°eren Square, before ending in a big party in Congress Square.

The procession featured 18 groups of children who had made their own costumes with the help of their teachers at kindergartens and schools, as well as traditional carnival figures from Slovenia and Croatia, a brass band and drummers.

While the partying will continue in the capital, most of other Slovenian towns and cities are holding their own parades and events.

The carnival festivities will culminate on Sunday with traditional events in Ptuj, Cerknica and Cerkno.

Slovenia's oldest town, Ptuj will host the biggest carnival, featuring the Kurenti, the horny sheepskin figures with huge cow bells, along with traditional costumes from across Central Europe.
