Campaigns to help frogs cross roads launched early this year

Kranj/Grosuplje, 24 February - Because of a mild and warm winter amphibians have started migrating to their breeding grounds earlier than usual, which has led to an earlier start of campaigns around the country helping the amphibians cross roads.

In the Grosuplje municipality the work began as early as 9 February when a protective barrier was set up next to the road. Now every evening volunteers gather to carry the amphibians, mostly frogs, across the road, said the Radensko Polje Natural Park, organising the campaign for the 17th time.

Amphibians are most vulnerable in the spring. They move slowly, carrying the offspring and some females also carry the males. In places where their migration route crosses a busy road, most of the population ends up under car wheels, said the NGO Žverca, organiser of a campaign in Medvode.

The migrations last from 14 days to a month with the amphibians most active in the evenings, the Žverca website reads.

Several campaigns across the country have already started and organisers are calling for volunteers, who should be equipped with reflective vests, flashlights and deep buckets.
