Carinthian Culture Days opening with an exhibition
Ljubljana, 6 March - A festival celebrating Slovenian culture in the Austrian region of Carinthia will start in Ljubljana on Wednesday with the opening of an exhibition by painter, writer and journalist Vincenc Gotthardt. The Carinthian Culture Days will bring a number of other events, including a concert, theatre plays and book presentations.
Hosted by the Club of Carinthian Slovenians in Ljubljana, two Klagenfurt-based minority associations and the Ljubljana Association of the Slovenian-Austrian Friendship, the festival will start with tonight's opening of the exhibition Na Robu Barve (On the Edge of Colour).
The festival, running until 14 April under honorary sponsorship of President Nataša Pirc Musar, will be opened by Rudi Merljak, the head of the department for Slovenians abroad at the Government Office for Slovenians Abroad, and Austrian Ambassador Elisabeth Ellison-Kramer is expected to attend as well.
The only event that is not admission free is the concert Koroška Pesem Brez Meja (Carinthian Song without Borders) featuring Octet Oktakord and Quintet Donet, who sing Slovenian songs, at Cankarjev Dom on 14 April.
On Saturday, the puppet show Jajce (Egg) directed by Richard Grilc will be performed at Mini Teater by a puppet group of the Catholic cultural association Šmihel.
Several other puppet groups from Carinthia will stage plays at the Ljubljana Puppet Theatre on 13 April and an exhibition will be set up there to mark the 50th anniversary of puppetry in Carinthia.
On 20 March, a monocomedy featuring Carinthian Slovenian Lara Marie Vouk will be staged at Družina Gallery.
The cultural and scientific society Slovenska Matica will host a launch of a new website, SloGled, next Tuesday, presenting theatre activity of Carinthian Slovenians in Slovenian and German. Two history books will also be launched on Wednesday and two days later three Slovenian cultural associations in Carinthia will be presented.
Slovenska Matica will also host a presentation on 4 April of a cultural and history guide of two Austrian states, Carinthia and Styria, by Jože Trill, and a guide of Graz by Simon Ošlak.
On 8 April, the Slovenian PEN centre will organise a Carinthian literary morning. On 11 April, three music and national heritage books will be presented at Slovenska Matica.
