Minister Arčon meets Slovenian mayors in Italy

Trieste, 21 June - Minister for Slovenians Abroad Matej Arčon met on Friday with the newly elected mayors in the Trieste and Gorizia provinces in the Italian region of Friuli Venezia Giulia. They talked about the use of Slovenian language and about topics that bring together and connect people on both sides of the border.

The meeting was constructive, said Arčon, adding that they discussed local issues that all mayors should be informed on as well as future challenges, including the European Association for Territorial Cooperation (EGTC). He sees the EGTC as a platform for cross-border projects and for stronger ties for the region.

The mayors and Arčon also spoke about the Slovenian language. Arčon said that Slovenia would pay more attention to the issue as he believes it is crucial for the ethnic minority to preserve their language.

They found that a lack of teachers is one of the main problems when it comes to teaching Slovenian in the areas around Trieste and Gorizia. They want to encourage young people to study education or Slovenian language, said Arčon, adding that scholarships for these courses are not out of question.

Arčon's Office for Slovenians Abroad is working to ensure the operations of Slovenian minority associations. He sees the office as a hub that cross-border municipalities can turn to when they need help.

Italy held its local elections alongside the EU elections. In the province of Trieste, etnic Slovenians were elected mayors in Sgonico, Monrupino and San Dorligo della Valle, while in the province of Gorizia, Slovenians were elected mayors in Doberdo del Lago, Savogna, and San Floriano del Collio.
