Pogačar takes yellow jersey in second stage of Tour de France

BOLOGNA, Italy - Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) took the yellow jersey in the second stage of the 2024 Tour de France in Bologna, finishing the stage alongside two of the most likely rivals for the general classification win, Jonas Vingegaard (Team Visma-Leas a Bike) and Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick Step). The three favourites and Richard Carapaz (EF Education-Easypost) now share the exact same time in the overall standings, with the jersey going to Pogačar due to him placing better than the rest in yesterday's stage. The fourth most likely contender for the overall victory, Slovenia's Primož Roglič, crossed the finish line with a gap of 21 seconds in the GC rankings and is currently 19th.

President calls for decisive response to homophobic incidents in Maribor

LJUBLJANA - President Nataša Pirc Musar condemned an attack on the LGBTIQ+ community in Maribor and what she believes was an insufficient response from the local authorities. In a statement marking the end of Prime Month, she said the attack was a cruel reminder that the community continued to face discrimination and violence and called on Maribor municipality to ensure the safety of its residents and promote tolerance.

Author Štajner receives Austrian literary prize

KLAGENFURT, Austria - Slovenian writer Tamara Štajner received one of the prizes given out as part of the Ingeborg Bachman Prize, a top accolades for German literary works. Given out annually by the city of Klagenfurt, this year's Ingeborg Bachman Prize went to German and Bosnian author Tijan Sila, while Štajner received one of the accompanying honours, the Kelag Prize for Luft nach Unten (Room for Less), a text about a complex relationship between a mother and a daughter.

Sea catch down again in 2023

LJUBLJANA - Slovenian fishermen caught 1,077 tonnes of fish, molluscs and crab in 2023, down 1% over the year before and a third below the 10-years average. The value of the catch was 1% higher than last year, reaching EUR 930,000, according to the Statistics Office. Fish accounted for 65% of the catch, amounting to nearly 70 tonnes, on par with last year, which saw the lowest fish catch since 1990.

Slovenia win fourth place in Volleyball Nations League

LODZ, Poland - Slovenian men's national volleyball team lost the game for third at the Volleyball Nations League. Poland defeated Slovenia 3:0 (24, 16, 17) after the latter lost against Japan last night. This is the second time team Slovenia reached fourth place in Volleyball Nations League, having climbed as far in 2021.
