Mammoth-shaped corn maze in Kranj a treat for puzzle solvers
Kranj, 6 July - Adventurous spirits looking to have some fun can test their mettle in solving a corn maze that will open near Kranj, north-west of Ljubljana, on Saturday. The mammoth-shaped maze is an homage to these extinct animals that used to roam the area in an ice age known as the Pleistocene epoch.

This is the third time in a row the organisers opened a maze in the summer, this time on the outskirts of Kranj, an area best accessed following the "Kranj Vzhod" or Kranj East motorway exit sign.
Spanning five hectares, the maze features interactive stations where visitors can have fun, test their skills and learn more about the ice age, cavemen and prehistoric animals.
"We powered up the time machine and went back to the ice age. We would like to see visitors travelling back in time and getting away from the fast pace of life that is spoiling our quality of life.
"In addition to the summer heat, smart devices and the digital world add to our overheating and weaken our relationships, so it's always a good idea to do something fresh," said Nataša Pečarič, who is part of the organising team.
The latest maze highlights the fact that the area used to be home to mammoths back in the Pleistocene epoch. In the 1950s, their skeletons were unearthed not far away from the maze, she told the newspaper Dnevnik.
This year, the challenges have been stepped up, but there will be a map in most sections of the maze to help those eager to solve it. What is crucial for finding a way out is working together, the organisers say, but even if visitors get lost, they can always find themselves again.
The newly opened venue will entertain children and those young at heart until the beginning of September when the corn will be harvested and used for animal feed.
The maze was devised in cooperation with the Maribor Faculty of Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering and Architecture, with student Urška Urankar designing the layout.
In the mid-summer the organisers will open another corn maze in the Maribor area in the east.
