Pirc Musar visits Slovenian community in Slavia Friulana
Cividale, 15 October - President Nataša Pirc Musar visited on Tuesday the Slavia Friulana region in Italy to meet with representatives of the local Slovenian community and the mayors of 18 municipalities populated by Slovenians. She addressed the ceremony for the 40th anniversary of a local bilingual school to note the importance of preserving the Slovenian language.
Addressing the ceremony in the Pavel Petričič School in San Pietro al Natisone, Pirc Musar congratulated its students for learning and thus preserving the Slovenian language in the region bordering with western Slovenia.
She urged them to be proud of their bilingualism, which she believes is an extraordinary asset in today's world, the president's office said in a press release.
"You are an important pillar of bilingual education and a key institution for the preservation of the Slovenian language in this region," the president said, noting the importance of education in general.
She also thanked the employees of the school for their educational work so far and all efforts to preserve and strengthen the presence of the Slovenian language in the region.
Pirc Musar assured the Slovenians from Slavia Friulana that they have her attention and support, as this is her duty in accordance with the Slovenian constitution. "And even if it wasn't. My door is always open for you," she stressed.
The Slovenian president also met with the mayors of 18 municipalities in the Italian province of Udine, and called on them to address all the challenges they face together.
She said that preserving the language, culture and identity of the Slovenian minority in Italy does not lay solely on the community's shoulders, but was a task of the broader society, which must recognise and respect the wealth of its multiculturalism.
Pirc Musar thanked them for their support to the Slovenian minority so far and said she expected that in the future they will together build an environment where everyone can live freely, while being proud of and respecting their roots.
