Ceremony marks start of Ljubljana rail hub upgrade
Ljubljana, 19 October - A plaque was unveiled at the Ljubljana train station on Saturday, marking the start of construction of a new, EUR 244 million, passenger centre that is to open in two years. Prime Minister Robert Golob said that the significance of the centre extended beyond Slovenia's borders because it sits at a crossroads of key European rail corridors.
"The project confirms that this government's decision to increase state investments was right," Golob said, as he addressed the event.
Infrastructure investments are also important in terms of resilience to the climate crisis, because mobility is a crucial aspect of the green transition, he added.
The event was also addressed by Infrastructure Minister Alenka Bratušek, who said that the Ljubljana train station was an important core hub of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).
"In less than two years, a central multi-modal hub and a state-of-the-art station will stand here, impressing passengers and bringing signifiant improvements to the hub of the main and regional tracks crucial for the operations of some 450 trains a day," Bratušek said.
Slovenia has acquired EUR 180 million in EU funds for the project from the Recovery and Resilience Facility, which, Bratušek believes, proves that Brussels finds this to be a significant and much-needed project.
Also at the event was Jerneja Jug Jerše, the head of the European Commission representation in Slovenia, saying that this was the largest project funded by the Recovery and Resilience Facility in Slovenia.
She said that the Commission would pay out the EUR 257.7 million from the facility approved for Slovenia next week.
