Project to promote use of Slovenian in Friuli Venezia Giulia

Ljubljana, 28 January - A project is in the works to promote the use of Slovenian in restaurants and other businesses in Italy's Friuli Venezia Giulia where the establishments will be given a label showing they also speak Slovenian. Their menus and signs will also be translated, the newspaper Delo said on Tuesday.

The project, led by the Slovenian Research Institute (Slori) in Trieste, aims to promote the public use of Slovenian language in the hospitality sector and other services in this Italian region, which is home to the Slovenian ethnic minority.

The institute's head Devan Jagodic told Delo that the project had been in the making for several years. It was first aimed at the Slovenian minority but they have also seen interest from Italian caterers who do not speak Slovenian, he said.

The project will help all restaurants and cafes involved by translating their menus and signs into Slovenian. The institute also prepared a glossary for the staff to communicate with Slovenian guests.

The materials in Slovenian are expected to be ready in the next months. So far, 20 restaurants and other businesses have joined the project, the majority from the Trieste area, according to Delo.
