Market Experiences Shortage of Foreign Currency

Final data for 1999 shows that for the first time in the history of independent Slovenia, purchases of foreign currency exceeded sales. Thus the foreign currency shortages in the national reserve should not come as a surprise, reports the latest edition of Gospodarska gibanja (Economic movements). The institute of economy at the Faculty of Law in Ljubljana, state this as the main reason for the substantial balance of payments deficit, also a first for independent Slovenia, which could not be neutralised by the net inflow of currency on the capital and financial markets.
