EU: a Problem or a Solution

Ljubljana, 8 July - We are all in favour of a close co-operation on an equal basis, but not in a way where all decisions would be reached by a giant bureaucratic machine in Brussels. We are in favour of a co-operation which would take into consideration a considerable amount of local autonomy and more open external borders, said Per Gahrton of the Sweedish Green party in his opening speech at the launch of the international congress of European future. Gathon, who is also an MEP, pointed out a number of weaknesses brought by EU membership and thus introduced a number of speakers from approximately 15 countries, who are participating in a two-day congress session held in Ljubljana in order to critically address possibilities for a better future in Europe and attempt to find realistic alternatives.
