Voting Legislation: Changes to Constitution to Bring New Electoral System

Ljubljana, 13 July - The parliament on Thursday evening secured the necessary two-thirds majority (68:13, 81 present) to start a procedure to change Article 80 of the Constitution in which way the improved proportional representation will eventually be written down in the Constitution, as was proposed on 25 January 2000 by a group of 28 MPs (ZLSD, LDS, DeSUS, and the representative of the Italian ethnic minority). Specific changes to the Constitution will be drafted by the commission for the electoral system and constitutional amendments. Once the Constitution is changed, a new bill on the general elections will be drafted as well.
