Review of Events Involving Slovenia in the Week from 8 July through 14 July

Ljubljana, 15 July - At the proposal of the parliamentary commission for electoral system and constitutional amendments, the parliament last week started a procedure to change Article 80 of the Constitution in which way the improved proportional representation will eventually be written down in the Constitution, as was proposed on 25 January 2000 by a group of 28 MPs (opposition ZLSD, LDS, DeSUS, and the representative of the Italian ethnic minority). The start of the procedure was supported by MPs of the coalition SLS+SKD Slovene People's Party, which provided the greatest surprise on the Slovene political scene in the past week. The SLS+SKD's decision particularly upset the leadership of the coalition partner, the Social Democrats (SDS).
