Slovenia to Join the EU among the First New Members, Says Verheugen

Kranj, 17 July - European Commissioner for Enlargement Guenter Verheugen does not doubt that Slovenia will be among the first candidate countries to join the EU. Slovenia has always had the best starting positions, which it has preserved, the commissioner told the press after meeting Slovene President Milan Kucan at the beginning of his two day visit to Slovenia on Monday. I have no doubts that Slovenia will be among the first candidate countries to join the EU, provided that the country continues with structural reforms and harmonisation, and if the political consensus in the country continues after the elections, said Verheugen.
